Description
The Cisco ASR 1001-X is part of Cisco’s ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers, providing a compact platform for enterprise and service-provider network-edge deployments. Its integrated architecture combines the route processor, Embedded Services Processor (ESP), and SPA interface processor into a single 1U chassis, reducing rack space and simplifying deployment.
The router provides six built-in 1 Gigabit Ethernet SFP interfaces and two built-in 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ interfaces. The six 1GE ports are SFP-only and do not support SFP+, while the two 10GE ports operate at 10GbE. The platform also includes one Network Interface Module (NIM) bay and one half-height SPA bay for additional connectivity options.
The ASR1001-X uses a fixed Embedded Services Processor with a default throughput of 2.5 Gbps. Its forwarding capacity can be increased through software-activated performance licenses to 5 Gbps, 10 Gbps, or 20 Gbps, allowing the router to scale with increasing traffic requirements without replacing the hardware.
For security-intensive environments, the platform supports up to 8 Gbps of security and cryptographic processing through its dedicated security processor. This makes it suitable for VPN, encrypted WAN, and secure enterprise edge applications.
The ASR1001-X supports Cisco IOS XE, providing enterprise routing, security, QoS, VPN, multicast, high-availability, and service-provider networking capabilities. Cisco also supports software redundancy through Dual IOS and provides extensive monitoring and management functions.
