Fortinet’s official data sheet specifies the FS-148E’s 48 × GE RJ45 interfaces, 4 × GE SFP interfaces, 104 Gbps switching capacity, 155 Mpps forwarding rate, 16K MAC table, and 1.5 MB packet buffer.

48 × Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 Ports

The FS-148E provides 48 Gigabit Ethernet copper ports for high-density network access.

These ports can be used to connect:

  • Desktop computers
  • Servers
  • Printers
  • IP phones
  • Network appliances
  • Wireless access points
  • Security devices
  • IoT and enterprise endpoints
  • Other Ethernet switches

The FS-148E is a non-PoE model, so its RJ45 ports do not provide PoE power.

4 × Gigabit SFP Uplink Ports

Four Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports provide fiber-based connectivity for uplinks and network expansion.

They can be used for:

  • Fiber uplinks
  • Switch-to-switch connections
  • Campus backbone connections
  • Longer-distance links
  • Network aggregation
  • Fiber-based infrastructure

SFP transceivers are not included unless specifically supplied with the exact product SKU or bundle.

Switching Performance

The FS-148E is designed to provide high-speed Layer 2 switching for enterprise access networks.

Performance Metric FS-148E
Switching Capacity 104 Gbps
Packet Forwarding 155 Mpps
MAC Addresses 16K
VLANs 4K
Latency 3,860 ns
Packet Buffer 1.5 MB

These are manufacturer specifications; actual network throughput can vary depending on packet size, traffic patterns, configuration, and connected equipment.

Layer 2 Networking

The FS-148E supports enterprise Layer 2 networking features for segmentation, redundancy, and traffic management.

Capabilities include:

  • VLANs
  • 802.1Q VLAN tagging
  • Spanning Tree Protocol
  • Rapid Spanning Tree
  • Multiple Spanning Tree
  • Link aggregation
  • LACP
  • LLDP
  • IGMP snooping
  • Storm control
  • Jumbo frames
  • Port mirroring
  • Loop protection
  • BPDU protection
  • Private VLAN capabilities

The switch supports up to 4,000 VLANs, with up to 32 spanning-tree instances.

Link Aggregation

The FS-148E supports link aggregation for combining multiple physical links into a logical connection.

It supports:

  • Up to 8 ports per LAG
  • Up to 16 LAG groups
  • LACP
  • Increased aggregate bandwidth
  • Link redundancy

Link aggregation can be used for switch uplinks, server connections, and other applications requiring additional bandwidth or resiliency.

Layer 3 Networking

The FS-148E supports Layer 3 networking capabilities through FortiSwitchOS, allowing it to participate in routed enterprise network architectures.

Depending on the FortiSwitchOS release and deployment mode, supported capabilities can include:

  • Static routing
  • IPv4/IPv6 routing
  • DHCP relay
  • Dynamic routing features
  • Multicast networking
  • VRRP
  • Policy-based routing

For exact feature availability, Fortinet recommends checking the applicable FortiSwitch feature matrix and FortiSwitchOS release for the deployed version.

FortiLink & FortiGate Integration

The FS-148E can be integrated with FortiGate using FortiLink.

This enables centralized management and visibility across the Fortinet network environment, including:

  • Switch discovery
  • Centralized configuration
  • VLAN management
  • Port configuration
  • Device monitoring
  • Network segmentation
  • Firmware management
  • Security Fabric integration
  • Authentication and access control

Fortinet’s current documentation continues to list the FS-148E as a supported FortiSwitch model in FortiSwitchOS releases.

Security Features

The FS-148E supports enterprise access-control and network-security functions such as:

  • Access Control Lists
  • 802.1X authentication
  • RADIUS authentication
  • MAC-based authentication
  • DHCP snooping
  • Dynamic ARP Inspection
  • IP Source Guard
  • MAC filtering
  • Port isolation
  • Device detection
  • Network segmentation

These capabilities can be combined with FortiGate security policies when the switch is deployed as part of the Fortinet Security Fabric.

Cable Diagnostics

The FS-148E supports cable diagnostics for connected copper ports.

Fortinet notes that this feature has limitations on the FS-148E: crosstalk cannot be detected, there is a delay before results are displayed, and cable-length/open/short results may be inaccurate. Running cable diagnostics on an active port can also interrupt traffic temporarily.

Management

The FS-148E can be managed using Fortinet’s switching management ecosystem.

Management options may include:

  • FortiGate / FortiLink
  • FortiSwitch Manager
  • Web GUI
  • CLI
  • SSH
  • SNMP
  • Syslog
  • REST API
  • Network monitoring
  • Firmware management

Fortinet’s documentation confirms support for the FS-148E in FortiSwitch Manager and current FortiSwitchOS releases.

Power & Reliability

The FS-148E uses an integrated AC power supply rather than redundant power supplies.

Power Specifications

  • Input: 100–240V AC
  • Frequency: 50/60Hz
  • Average consumption: 19.804W
  • Maximum consumption: 22.137W

Important Compatibility Note

The FS-148E is the non-PoE version of the FS-148E family and provides 48 × GE RJ45 + 4 × GE SFP interfaces.

Fortinet also identifies FS-148E-POE as a separate model. Therefore, do not advertise PoE functionality or a PoE power budget for an FS-148E unless the physical unit is specifically the PoE variant.

SFP transceivers and fiber cables should also be treated as separate accessories unless explicitly included in the supplied package.
